LISSIM 7: Syntactic Variation May 26 - June 14, 2013

TEACHING PLAN: LEGATE

Ergativity is typically treated in the theoretical literature as a single parameter, with the behaviour of ergatives and absolutives treated as essentially uniform across languages. This over-simplification masks interesting variation between (and within) languages. In this class we consider the variation in ergatives, and in the object of non-nominative subject constructions more generally. We examine the distinct roles of morphology and of syntax in producing the observed variation. Topics to be covered include:

  • the theory of case
  • variation in use of ergative based on properties low in the clause structure
  • variation in use of ergative based on nominal type
  • variation in behaviour in the object of non-nominative subject constructions:
    • optionality of case marking
    • differential object marking
    • relationship between case and agreement
    • non-ergative, non-nominative subjects
